Blackmagic Releases Beta of DaVinci Resolve 9

Blackmagic Design has released the latest Beta for DaVinci Resolve, which they herald as the world’s most advanced color correction tool.”  And to put their own new touch onto this very popular app, Blackmagic has rebuilt Version 9 with a completely redesigned interface.

“This significant user interface overhaul has been created to harness the power of multiple new technologies added to DaVinci Resolve in the last few years, including automatic 3D eye matching, multi layering timelines, XML support plus more camera and file type support.” – DaVinci Resolve Beta Press Release

The new Blackmagic-fied release of Resolve sports easier project import, export and selection workflow, the ability to scrub and review media assets from thumbnails for faster shot selection, production metadata fields for entering on set shot notes and larger color control palettes for grading and control of power windows, keys, sizing, tracking and stabilization, camera raw and data burn ins.

Other new features in DaVinci Resolve 9 include ‘Log grading’ across every corrector node, audio playback support to 16 channels per source clip, and audio renders in both Quicktime and MXF.  Automatic ‘Audio Sync’, clip data burn ins and batch rendering for dailies have also been added, as well as new 3D options.

“This is a major rewrite of the DaVinci Resolve software,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Now customers can focus on their creative work rather than struggling with cumbersome software feature sets. DaVinci Resolve 9 will be great for new users, as it includes user interface elements that are common to other video software.  Our customers will love it.”
Blackmagic has also made the learning curve a little less step, allowing new users to be up and running with a new project in as little as three clicks: one to log in, one to drop media into the project and the next to grade.   That means they can use one of the 44 “prebuilt looks” to get an instant read and adjustment, or delve deeper into the software to tweak it according to the increased color pallets.
DaVinci Resolve 9 public beta is now available for Mac, Windows and Linux as a free download to existing full featured DaVinci Resolve customers, as well as the free DaVinci Resolve Lite.   Users can access it off the Blackmagic support page. Wow.  It looks like Blackmagic is going wider in attracting it’s consumer base, while retaining all the powerful features as the previous version so that seasoned users don’t miss a step.
