OS X Mountain Lion Most Popular Release in Apple History

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Apple is reporting that just 48 hours after it’s launch, OS X Mountain Lion has become it’s high selling OS in history.  With over 3 million downloads in just four days, Mountain Lion, which sells for $19.99, is accounting for over 3% of Apple’s internet traffic as users line up to upgrade.

“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

Schiller’s boast is backed up by hard third party data from Chitika, an analytics firm what monitors download sales and traffic, which stated that “… based on Apple’s June 2012 announcement that there are currently 66 million Mac users in the wild, we can infer that 2.11 million Mac users downloaded OS X Mountain Lion in the past 48 hours.  Using this figure, if we assume that 90 percent of these users paid to upgrade, OS X Mountain Lion generated $38 million in revenue for Apple in the past 48 hours.”

That’s three times as many to date that paid to upgrade to OS X Lion last year.  And it’s also probably powered in part by users who have bought new Macs within the last several months and received a voucher for a free upgrade to Mountain Lion when it was released.  The “Up to Date Program,” however, has encountered some hiccups, leaving some to have their voucher codes denied.   And when they try again, the site tells them their codes have already been redeemed.  Apple has since acknowledged the bug and encourages those who have dealt with it to contact them for a new set of voucher codes.

If you’re on the fence (and can actually install it), here’s some of the new features that may sway you. First, features include a new Messages app, Notification Center, native Facebook integration, SIRI like voice dictation, AirPlay Mirroring and Game Center (meh).  Mountain Lion also comes with iCloud integration to sync and backup data like Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages, Reminders and Notes, and iWork documents.  It not only backs up, but can populate data across all your devices.

Then, there’s the price … $19.99.  Can’t beat that, especially when you can install it on up to five computers.
