Fans of the Iron Man film franchise have grown used to seeing Tony Stark as a self-made, self-assured hero. However, producer Kevin Feige has revealed, while speaking to MTV News, that the third installment will show Stark in a whole new light.
Indeed, the Marvel producer confirmed that the billionaire playboy, who will once again be played by Robert Downey Jr, has been deeply affected by the events in last summer’s The Avengers.
He said: “It’s almost like post-traumatic stress [disorder]. He has retreated after the events of The Avengers into his workshop, where he’s building advanced versions of his suits.
“He has [designed] a version of the suit that can latch onto him in individual pieces, any time, anywhere. He starts to realise [that] he doesn’t want to be out of the suit.”
Of course, fans had been aware that this film, which is being helmed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang; writer of Lethal Weapon), will be more dark than any of the other films.
However, it seems that after the box office spectacles of the first two movies, Marvel now want to shake up the franchise. Feige says that this will not only involve main antagonist The Mandarin, played by Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, but also relieving Stark of much of his powers.
He said: “Much of the movie is Tony in the middle of the country without his tools and a fairly broken suit to help him.
“But that’s his superpower: his power is his brain. It’s fun to put Tony Stark in a corner with nothing and see how he can get out of it.”
Also, rather excitingly, Feige insisted that Marvel envisage a long running Iron Man franchise, in the mould of Bond.
He said: “Characters like James Bond and Batman, whose stories go on and on and on – I think Tony is one of those characters.
“I do think we have more Tony Stark tales to tell, and we’ll take it one movie – or maybe two movies – at a time.”
Now, if that isn’t enough to get fans excited, I don’t know what will!
Iron Man 3 will be released in the UK on the 26th April and in the US on May 3rd.
