Aside from being a phenomenal actor who has little or no sense of humor, Sean Penn is also occasionally a phenomenal director with little or no sense of humor.
His last directorial feature Into the Wild was his best yet, after strong yet sporadic output including The Pledge and The Crossing Guard both starring Jack Nicholson.
After 5 years in the directing wilderness, mainly spent ingratiating himself to small South America countries that treat him like a king, the double-Oscar winner is ready to return to the big chair.
The Comedian is a project which has been in development for a while now, which will star Robert De Niro as a washed up comedian. Kristen Wig will also co star and add some much needed comedic talent as Penn and De Niro are about as funny as a poke in the eye with a jaggy stick.
But, the real news is that Penn has had another project, Crazy for the Storm, officially greenlit by Warner Bros. The film will be an adaptation of a Norman Ollestad book, which recounts the story of the a young Ollestad’s miraculous survival of plane crash that claimed his father and mentor in 1979.
Ollestad’s father, also called Norman, had an unusual fascination with extreme sports and surfing in particular. At the age of 3 the young Ollestad started to learn from his father, the skills that he claimed were the reason he was the sole the survivor of the crash.
The cast has yet to be announced, and while Penn has never appeared in any of his films, he regularly casts heavy weight method actors such as himself, including Viggo Mortensen (The Indian Runner) and Benicio Del Toro ( The Indian Runner, The Pledge).
Will Fetters, who is penning Clint Eastwood’s remake of A Star Is Born, has already written the script. And, according to Variety, this project seems to be moving ahead at pace, leaving The Comedian firmly on the shelf.
