UPDATED: Peter Jackson Wants to Direct Episode of Doctor Who

UPDATE:  Sadly, DOCTOR WHO UK is citing a Deadline report that PJ simply doesn’t have time to step into the TARDIS:

” The director is completely engrossed in the second and third installments of The Hobbit trilogy, and he will not be emerging from Middle Earth for the better part of two years.”

As for whether JK Rowling is penning a special Whovian Short Story, it’s still anyone’s guess.  But she holds the singular distinction of having her Harry Potter series referenced in the Series 3 episode “The Shakespeare Code.”

Peter Jackson may like Hobbits, but he LOVES the Daleks. So much so that he offered to direct an episode of Doctor Who and waive his director’s fee if show runner Steven Moffat would give him one of the iconic Doctor Who villains in exchange.  Well, it sounds like Jackson may get his wish, as Moffat may have strongly suggested the rumor may be true and an episode could end up shooting in New Zealand.

“We talked at The Hobbit premiere – he just wants a Dalek. So we’ll give him a Dalek and he’ll direct an episode. I think he’d like to us to go to New Zealand. I think it’s entirely possible.” – Steven Moffat, Q&A, AdLib Comedy Event

The news came as Steven Moffat was answering a series of questions at the AdLib Comedy Event in Edinburgh, Scotland yesterday.  Moffat seemed to suggest that even though Jackson, who just wrapped all principal photography for the remaing Hobbit films and is deep into post production of “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,” he’s a passionate enough Whovian to make time between that and the third film to helm the TARDIS. And he would also be directing Peter Capaldi, who was recently chosen to be the 12th Doctor after Matt Smith leaves the series this Christmas.

If Jackson is going to direct a film with the Daleks as the “big bad,” it could be Capaldi’s first exposure to the Doctor’s iconic nemesis.  And that would be an amazing episode to be sure.  And there’s also news that fellow Kiwi Neil Cross, is also writing a script (or scripts) for season 8.  “There’s a whole bunch of stuff I want to do,” says Cross, “but I have to find out from Steven what his intentions for the Doctor are and what sort of stories he wants me to write.”  Both Jackson and Cross are serious Who fans, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that they may be collaborating on a story to be shot down under.

Other diddy’s that Moffat seemed to be coy about is the possibility that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling may pen a Doctor Who short story as part of the 50th anniversary celebration coming in November. Rowling is rumored to be one of 11 popular children’s authors, including Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl) who will pen stories for children about the Doctor.

And that leaves me to wonder if they will be stand alone short stories in the Who-verse, or will they be more crossovers that will have the Doctor encounter Rowling’s Harry Potter or Colfer’s Artemis Fowl as companions on stand alone adventures.  I know my son would love that as he’s a huge “Fowler.”  And it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch, either, as Doctor Who has already done a cross over comic book with Star Trek: The Next Generation and the crew of the starship Enterprise.

But even though all this news is exciting for Whovians, we have to keep one thing in mind …. to paraphrase Who companion River Song: “Rule one: Moffat  lies.”  And he admitted as much at ComiCon, when he said he’s been lying his ass off for six months about the 50th anniversary special.  But then again, as Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor says “If I always told you the truth, I wouldn’t need you to trust me.”
